Why You Will Fail At Your New Year's Resolution. Again.


Yipee! Smash 2022 by taking massive action and hereโ€™s how!!


What is that one resolution that you want to achieve so badly?


Is it exercise, diet, starting a business, date nights with your spouse, working for that promotion, stopping drinking, overcoming procrastination, spiritual connection, spending more quality time with your children?


My 2022 resolution for both my business and personal life is to get out more!!!


I like how the New Year gives us an option to reset with resolutions. It feels hopeful, doesnโ€™t it?


๐๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ž ๐š๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐…๐ž๐›๐ซ๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐ž๐ฆ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ž ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐ง๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ!


Do you ever wonder why?


The reason is simple. We count on willpower to get us the desired habits, beliefs, and actions.


๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐›๐ž ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ, ๐ง๐จ๐ง-๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ซ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ง ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐จ ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฆ.

My friend, willpower itself can be the source of self-sabotage.


According to American Psychological Association & most psychology researchers define willpower as:


โ˜‘๏ธ The ability to delay gratification and resist short-term temptations to meet long-term goals;

โ˜‘๏ธ The capacity to override an unwanted thought, feeling, or impulse;

โ˜‘๏ธ The conscious, effortful regulation of the self, by the self;

โ˜‘๏ธ A limited resource capable of being depleted.


Now read that again!!! Doesnโ€™t it sound like willpower takes too much energy?


In other words, you have to be good at ' self-control'.

Or what the subconscious wants versus what the conscious believes to be true.


So instead of relying on willpower to help you ace that resolution, you might want to consider this:


โœ… Take that resolution and break it down to specific goals. You know the drill... S.M.A.R.T goals.

โœ… Secondly, focus on the person you need to be to achieve those goals. Instead of saying to yourself, I must lose 20 kgs in 2022, how about changing that to an empowering question like โ€˜how can I change my eating habits to healthy ones that I can enjoy whilst I work towards my 20kg weight loss goal?

โœ… Focus on your thoughts. The results you see today are because of your thoughts. In the same way, your thoughts about your new yearโ€™s resolution will create the same result.

In the end, you will create willpower that serves you.


The only way you can consistently show up for that resolution is if you consistently work on your thoughts about your goals.
